Judge Announcement!
Louise Lockhart
Louise started The Printed Peanut in 2012 as a way of applying her drawings to products. Louise is an avid people watcher and loves watching the world around her. She takes inspiration from vintage textiles, folk art, children’s books and old print ephemera, of which she has a large collection surrounding her cluttered desk. She creates her work by cutting out shapes from paper with a big pair of brass scissors, aiming for a playful line and unintended wonkiness.
Her unique and recognisable work is often infused with humour and joy, making her designs loved and collected by a wide range of people.
Anna Ryzhova
With over 10 years of international experience, Anna Ryzhova is an illustrator and visual artist working across editorial, children’s illustration, educational formats, and public art.
Her practice merges academic draftsmanship with contemporary storytelling, often drawing from everyday life and the cultural environments she inhabits.
Originally of Russian origin, she is particularly interested in bilingual and educational formats that foster accessibility and cross-cultural understanding.
Anna currently resides in a small coastal town in Turkey, where she lives with her dog Kirpi — a former street pup — and cares for a group of local stray animals.
Petr Horáček
Petr Horáček was born in Prague and studied at the Academy of Fine Art. After graduating in 1994, he moved to live in England. His first two picture books were published in 2001, winning the 'Books for Children' Newcomer award. Since then he has won a string of other international prizes and distinctions, including shortlisting for the Independent Booksellers Week book award in 2016.
Petr tutors aspiring illustrators as well as holding workshops for children at literary festivals, bookshops and schools. He lives in Worcestershire, UK.

It’s that time of year!
Illustration Awards no.18 – Theme: Tales of the Uncanny
This year, we invite illustrators to step into the strange, the surreal, and the shadowy. Tales of the Uncanny calls for visual interpretations of the eerie and the extraordinary — where the familiar becomes unsettling and the ordinary hides something otherworldly.
We're seeking original illustrations that explore uncanny narratives: ghost stories, twisted folklore, dream logic, psychological unease, and the blurred lines between reality and imagination.
Submission deadline: 23:50pm 30th of June 2025
Open to: All students and Emerging and established illustrators worldwide
Prizes include:
Publication in the 18th Illustration awards annual and a free copy posted to you anywhere in the world!
Exhibited as part of our Illustration awards exhibition tour!
Portfolio reviews with our invited industry specialists!
Risograph Print voucher! Worth 50x A5 prints using 2 colours.
Entry cost: £10 per submission (max of 3 submissions)
The most highly commended entries entered are chosen by a professional industry selection panel for inclusion in the annual and, from these, for the 2025-2026 exhibition. The Illustration awards receives entries each year from all over the world and is sent round the globe!
There are two sections of the Awards: 'Student' and 'Emerging and Established'. The Student category is open to all students over 18 years of age worldwide. The Emerging and Established category is open to any practising illustrators who wish to gain exposure of their work and to those who are more established and are already a part of the illustration world.
The selected work will be showcased at several galleries and events across the UK in 2025-6, as well as published in the 18th Cheltenham Illustration Awards Annual, which will be distributed to educators and publishers, internationally. FAQ
Can I submit work as a group?
Yes group / collective works are accepted
Can it be mixed media or unusual media?
Yes! We love illustrations that think outside the box! Crochet, Paper cut outs, 3D models…go for it!
Are you looking for one image?
Image submissions should be 1-3 image file/s, clearly named with you name, per image (max of 3). Within these images however there can be a selection of panels, images or cells if your submission is a narrative which relies on this format (i.e A comic).
Can I submit more than one image?
Yes. Entries are limited to 3 per person.
What is the theme?
Each year we offer a new theme for your interpretation. In 2024 is Tales of the Uncanny. This is free for you to explore.
When will I know if my submission is successful?
This year successful submissions will receive an email of confirmation in the autumn of 2025.
We get many entries so please don't be disheartened if you are unsuccessful. We get so many great images we cannot include due to only space for a limited amount, so we look for a diverse cross section of images.
Can i send my entry in an email with my information in an email itself?
No.
Please do not do this as it will render your entry invalid and you will not be entered into the competition.
Do i call my entry 'CIA 2025' or the theme name?
No, Please name you work with the title (followed by "01" if it is part of a series).

The theme for 2024’s Exhibition & Annual is 'Future Forecasts'
The focus of the Awards is narrative. Visual storytelling, whether sequential or single image, gives scope to the imagination and opens up possibilities beyond the present moment; what happened before? What happens next?
“Embark on a visual journey into the unknown with the Illustration Awards theme "Future Forecasts." This theme invites artists to dive into the depths of their imaginations and depict their visions of the future through illustrations. From gleaming metropolises to the untamed frontiers of unexplored worlds, artists are encouraged to explore the myriad possibilities that lie ahead. Whether it's a utopian paradise, a dystopian nightmare, or something entirely unique, we want to see your interpretation of what the future holds.”
